OVERVIEW
Ipswich Grammar School (IGS), Queensland’s first secondary school and first Grammar School was established in 1863 and has produced men of distinction for 142 years. The school tenaciously guards the old ‘3 R’s’, focussing on literacy while also honouring the new basics: technology, thinking skills, problem solving, communication skills, teamwork and building self-esteem.
Embracing modern research into raising sons and educating boys, the school has established a Centre for Specialisation in Boys’ Education. Research findings into the ways that boys learn best are integrated into all aspects of the School. For example, the school recognises the role of the Arts and Sport in boys’ education, as a way to express themselves, build self-esteem and learn important life skills. Visiting specialists speak with students, parents and the wider community about issues relating to the education and development of young men.
IGS has a zero tolerance of bullying policy and has specific elements of its Life Skills program to deal with bullying and related issues of personal development and growth. Importantly, the school realises that students must be happy at school.
